Asbestos Awareness Training
Asbestos is an extremely dangerous substance that kills approximately 5’000 workers every year, making it one of the biggest causes of worker death in the UK.
When asbestos is disturbed it releases fibres into the air that can be easily inhaled by anyone in the surrounding area, taken into the body and over a fair amount of time cause irreversible damage.
Health and safety is an essential part of any and every workplace, so doing the relevant training courses is vital for an employee, and asbestos awareness and training is an increasing growing area of expertise.
Anyone who is liable to disturb asbestos or work in a building containing asbestos should have the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others.
Even though asbestos has been banned from use in the building industry, it is still present in older buildings where it was used for fireproofing and insulation, so it is still a concern for workers.
Examples of those affected include:
- General maintenance workers
- Electricians
- Plumbers
- Joiners
- Painters and decorators
- Plasterers
- Fire/burglar alarm installers
- Roofers
- Architects
- Plus, many more
Aside from the fact that it is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 for anyone who may encounter asbestos to have the appropriate training, there are many benefits that come with asbestos awareness training.
Employees will learn the necessary steps to protect themselves including health risks, PPE and emergency procedures. Additionally, potential clients will see that your team has knowledge and expertise.
DBI Control recently reached out to Common Sense Safety Solutions and had a half-day training session within our workplace with our instructor Nigel. This helped everyone understand the risks and precautions required to put in place should you encounter the substance.
Even though DBI Control employees would not be disturbing any asbestos and would only be working within a building that asbestos has been located, we have ensured that everyone is now aware of how to identify asbestos, the dangers surrounding it and the safety precautions in place.
