Invertek Optidrive VFDs
A variable frequency drive (VFD) is an electronic device that controls the speed of the AC induction motors.
It has always been useful to control the speed of electric motors used in industry. Nearly every process that uses a motor will benefit from speed control.
Not only is the process generally improved, but in many cases (particularly with pumps and fans) this is considerably energy saving.
Before electronic controllers were available, motors were controlled in various ways. For example, by controlling the field current on a DC motor using a series of resistors, or by using other motors.
However, when Thyristors, the first power semi-conductors, became available in the 1950’s, it became possible control the armature voltage, and therefore the speed, of a DC motor using phase controls.
The challenger was to control the speed of the AC induction motor. While a DC machine usually has two wound parts, as well as brushes and a commutator, the AC machine has a simple, fixed winding and a rotor.
The rotor usually consists of conductors formed by casting aluminium or copper in the core, and there are no brushes or commutators. The machine is therefore cheaper, simpler and more reliable.
Its little surprise that these machines make up the majority of motors used in the worlds industries now. There are many reasons for using VFDs; they make process and machine operation much easier, reduce inrush current and make starting more controlled.
They also reduce unnecessary noise and wear, and probably the key advantage is they will reduce your power bill.
Once you’ve decided on the power and voltage of your VFD, you need to consider the protection level. If the drive is mounted in a cubicle or inside a machine, you can use an IP20 rated drive. However, if the variable frequency will be exposed to dust, dirt or liquids in any way you will need IP55 or IP66.
Installing a VFD is pretty straightforward, but always remember it needs to be kept cool, so there should be a good airflow around the drive.
